abstract

background: accurate voxel phantom is needed for dosimetric simulation in radiation therapy for malignant tumors in female pelvic region. however, most of the existing voxel phantoms are constructed on the basis of caucasian or non-chinese population. materials and methods: a computational framework for constructing female pelvic voxel phantom for radiation dosimetry was performed based on chinese visible human (cvh) datasets. first, several organs within pelvic region were segmented from cvh datasets. then, polygonization and voxelization were performed based on the segmented organs and a 3d computational phantom is built in the form of a set of voxel arrays. results: the generated phantom can be converted and loaded into treatment planning system for radiation dosimetry calculation. from the observed dosimetric results of those organs and structures, we can evaluate their absorbed dose and implement some simulation studies. conclusion: a voxel female pelvic phantom was developed from cvh datasets. it can be utilized for dosimetry evaluation and planning simulation, which would be very helpful to improve the clinical performance and reduce the radiation toxicity on organ at risk (oar). iran. j. radiat. res., 2010 8 (2): 87-91

Development of Prototype Iranian male pelvic phantom for internal dosimetry

Introduction: Existing phantoms have been constructed based on Caucasian, non-Caucasian and race-specific datasets. According to previous studies made efforts to present Korean- specific phantoms and Chinese female phantom based on CVH dataset due to compare the resulting internal dosimetry with the Caucasian based data showed possible racial difference in human anatomy between ...

Development of Iranian Adult Female Reference Phantom for Internal Dosimetry Calculations

Estimation of organ doses in diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures is an area of particular concern for radiation protection, in all over the world. The stylized computational phantoms have contributed significantly to radiation dosimetry in nuclear medicine; however, their simplified treatment of human anatomy is being criticized. Due to the fact that the ICRP adult reference ...

Computational Anthropomorphic Phantoms for Radiation Protection Dosimetry: Evolution and Prospects

Phantoms for radiation dosimetry, including physical phantoms for radiological use in medicine in particular, were introduced as early as the 1910s [1] while those for radiation protection dosimetry started to evolve in the late 1950s. This innovation was driven partly from the consensus that dose quantity for protection purposes should be assessed in “receptor conditions” instead of the tradit...

Individual virtual phantom reconstruction for organ dosimetry based on standard available phantoms

Background: In nuclear medicine application often it is required to use computational methods for evaluation of organ absorbed dose. Monte Carlo simulation and phantoms have been used in many works before. The shape, size and volume in organs are varied, and this variation will produce error in dose calculation if no correction is applied. Materials and Methods: A computational framewo...
